Surprises at Trini*

Yesterday evening I attended the ‘Trini and Mercedes Benz’ annual party for the first time and was pleasantly surprised.

Selena at Trini

After getting over my trepidation over the state of my hair (It thrilled me that people thought I knew anything about hair when I was there – I don’t know much.) I arrived at the party and was delighted with the Trini staff. They were so knowledgeable, polite, courteous, friendly – and so good looking that it looked more like a convention of models. Their articulate professionalism was impressive and genuinely intriguing. Selena in particular gave me a tour of the salon and explained lots of things to me in exquisite detail. I never thought a hairdryer could sound interesting but after being told about an ionic hairdryer they use – well, who would have guessed?

Most of all I was intrigued by the revelation of a different kind of hair extension (I thought I’d tried them all.). Trini does something I’d never heard of – taped extensions. Soon I’ll interview Marie Fonseca who is the specialist who does them at Trini. She looks like Adele with more beautiful hair.

Expert Truffle Risotto Maker/Chef from Tabu Restaurant, Brickell.

Wine and vodka were available to drink and two DJs played. A special shout out to local restaurant Tabu who circulated mushroom and truffle risotto with of course the intoxicating truffle smell, and Ari who delivered such an excellent hand massage and fascinating information about quality products for the skin.

Trini – definitely a special place that makes you want to go back for more.

Get a Natural High at Deco Drive!*

‘Super Banny’ and Hookah, Deco Drive

It was my great pleasure to experience smoking a hookah again at Deco Drive on Lincoln Road, South Beach.

In London I used to smoke Middle Eastern hookahs which used combinations of natural fruit leaves – mango was my favorite. Deco Drive hookahs are different, they use natural leaves plus a little tobacco. I had the Star Buzz, a delightfully fragrant mix of Blue Mist, Black Grape, Queen of Sex (! – very fruity, lots of berries), mint colossus.

Smoking these leaves in a hookah gives you a great high – with no drugs! I think it’s because of the increase in oxygen you take in when you smoke. ‘Super Banny’ – server, bartender, hookah maker – says if you don’t usually smoke you should smoke the hookah lightly, not take too much in. Otherwise, in my experience, you get dizzy. Also in my experience, you can become unflatteringly red!

Hookah smoking is really relaxing. They are traditionally smoked by groups of people and doing one with friends is a great way to start your evening in South Beach - Deco Drive is open 10am – 2.30pm.

Cigar Room

Deco Drive maintains very high levels of cleanliness and quality of product. They sell the hookah experience, white label cigars, food and alcohol. Even the cocktails use premium brands – that’s not a norm in Miami.

Deco Drive Blackberry Mojito

I’m not usually a fan of mojitos because they’re usually made with far too much sugar. But Deco Drive’s mojitos are divine – no typical rim of sugar, and they employ pure, clean ingredients. Loved the Blackberry Mojito – Bacardi Superior, fresh blackberries, mint, lime, a splash of sweet-n-sour and club soda. Even a slice of raw sugar cane that you can stir your drink with! The Tropical Mojito came a close second, with Malibu Coconut and Passion Fruit Rum, fresh mint, lime, splash of mango puree and Sprite.

Tropical Mojito

The menu is healthy (with lunch and dinner prices) and a full range of the coffees that people love in Miami – cortadito (my favorite), cafe con leche, Irish coffee, etc.

Cortadito

L’il Wayne is a partner with Deco Drive and I can see why. This brand offers a consistently high level of experience.  I like the ethos of Deco Drive, they really go all out to make the customer happy with everything they do (after all, the tagline for my art is ‘Art That Makes You Feel Good’) , from their hookah lounge and cigar shops to their newest venture, Abuela’s Cuban restaurant in South Beach.

Smoking a hookah is extremely relaxing and convivial. I’m considering moving to South Beach and I know that if I do I’ll become one of Deco Drive’s many loyal and happy customers. I really recommend stopping by next time you’re in South Beach. It’s a natural way to get high and also a very nice social thing to do. I’m sure a lot of business meetings would benefit from smoking a hookah too!

Star Buzz – looks like frankincense.

A sign of educated approval is that lots of Middle Eastern visitors LOVE Deco Drive. They typically stay for weeks and return to Deco Drive every day. ‘Super Banny’ says the big favorites with Middle Easterners are apple and grape. Apple is favored by the men – a stronger taste – and grape by the ladies. (There is a particularly Middle Eastern offering on the menu too – Moroccan Delights, a mixture of dates and nuts.).

For the price of a couple of cocktails you can enjoy a premium hookah for over 2 hours. Deco Drive is distinctive in that it offers premium blends (in their hookahs) at prices cheaper than local competitors who don’t use premium blends. Hookahs are priced $20 – $28, a bargain for a great time and what, for many, is a novel experience.

Disposable Mouthpiece for Hookah

An innovation here is the disposable plastic mouthpieces that you are given to fit into the mouth of the hookah. In London we used to wipe the mouthpiece lightly as the hookah was passed around a group, at Deco Drive everyone is given their own plastic mouthpiece which is slipped into the mouth of the hookah as it is passed around. Hygienic or what?! Even the straws are hygienic – when you get your drink the plastic straw in it has a paper covering on the end that you take off before you drink.

Five stars for the Deco Drive experience! You can even buy a hookah and everything you need for it to take home.

Little Black Dress Party, Blue Martini, Miami

Little Black Dress Event, Blue Martini, Miami

Anyone who knows me knows I really like Blue Martini and I go there a lot. But last night – Little Black Dress night – did not start out good. My friend and I almost walked out after waiting 15 min. for a drink and with bar staff ignoring us  (we were sitting at the bar), until one much nicer barmaid gave us free martiniss because I asked to see the manager. It’s not good when one of your favorite places sucks – at least for a while.

Onto the good stuff -

Jessica Mena and Karim Aboud of Michael Kors with Prize Bag at Blue Martini, Miami

It was fun speaking with Karim Aboud (brand manager) and Jessica Mena (store manager) of Michael Kors. Karim is holding a beautiful white leather Michael Kors bag which was the grand prize of the night. I guess I didn’t win it.

Also a pleasure to speak with with was Eboney Johnson of AlwayzLadylike, more about Alwayz Ladylike soon!

Awesome DJ!

VJ Gio – DJ with wonderful music and videos. I asked VJ about his show including some hysterical videos featuring two dancing kids. Here’s what he said;

” I’ve been DJing for over 18 years now. In the past four years technology has advanced to make it practical to be able to play music videos and since MTV stopped playing them, I felt that there was need and for this type of entertainment. Since every bar has Tv’s for sporting events, I thought bars would be a good place for this type of entertainment. I’ve done all types of DJing, from Weddings to Nightclubs and I’ve found that the bars are best venues for the type of Video DJing that I do. You don’t have to dance to have a good time (Even though the club DJ in me will always try to get you on your feet!).

Most of the videos I play come from an online Video DJ pool. Some of the videos I spin are from YouTube including LMFAO – ‘I’m sexy & I know It’ featuring The Fat Kid.
The other kid has made himself famous on YouTube by lip syncing his favorite songs. His name is Keenan Cahill. He has his own channel on YouTube “beenerkeekee19952″. He’s 16 years old and suffers from a disability, I believe it’s called MI6. (Not a100% sure on the name of it.)
There are other parodies that I play including president Barack Obama singing ‘Call Me Maybe’, and many more… My sets are usually about 6 hours and are a mixture of ALL types of music (from Country to Dubstep and everything in between) and peppered with a little comedy.”
Reach VJ Gio at  305-588-8325 or www.barflybuzz.com   for an amazing night!

Kudos

Kudos to Behrman Communications for arranging a truly enjoyable and excellent lunch for Medicis Aesthetics today at Hakkasan Restaurant at the Fontainebleu hotel, South Beach.

Attending were some really interesting ladies and I’ll be writing more on a couple soon. In particular Kino MacGregor’s
